FM Rock: May 1968
They don't call it Detroit Rock City for nothin' - WABX-FM in Detroit has been broadcasting the progressive rock format for quite some time at this point, but now WKNR-FM has decided that it's time for them to jump into this new format and give WABX some competition. Lucky Detroit listeners now have options on their radio dials and I would be surprised if some of the trippier denizens got two radios and played them both at the same time, creating their own third stream. ;)
Musically, the Stones change direction with their new single, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", moving away from the psychedelia and toward the straight ahead rock that will become their trademark. Not that psychedelia is going away just yet as there are lots of new mind bending sounds from bands with names like Orphan Egg and Ars Nova. Long songs are still in vogue as well... check out The Collectors track "What Love (Suite)" which is quite an excursion and was getting airplay from nearly every progressive rock station at the time but you will be hard pressed to ever hear it on classic rock radio today, mostly due to its length (ironically), but maybe also due to its strong lyrics as well.
